Advanced Placement
Newport Central Catholic is pleased to offer courses designated as Advanced Placement (AP). These courses remain among NCC’s most rigorous and reflect a demanding academic curriculum.
AP: The Basics
AP remains a nationally-recognized program through the College Board. An AP course is developed at the College Board by a committee consisting of college faculty and AP teachers. Each AP course covers the breadth of information, skills, and assignments found in that AP subject’s corresponding college course.
Our AP courses are taught by highly-qualified high school teachers who use the national AP Course Descriptions to guide the development of their syllabi. Each discipline’s course description outlines content, describes the subject’s curricular goals, and provides sample examination questions.
Students are enrolled in the year-long course, which culminates in the national AP exam each May. Students who successfully complete the AP course and score well on the national AP exam may earn college credit prior to enrollment in their post-secondary school.
Most colleges/universities grant credit and placement for scores of 3, 4, or 5, but each school’s AP policies vary. Students are advised to consult their intended college/university to see how AP credits will transfer.

To reflect and award high school credit for the academic rigor AP courses demand, NCC assigns the highest amount of quality points to AP courses.

Of the 38 possible AP Courses, the following are those that NCC students have recently completed either in house or online:

Dual Credit
Newport Central Catholic is pleased to offer Dual Credit courses – online and in-person. Dual Credit courses are designed to allow students to earn college credit in conjunction with their high school credit. NCC will allow students to take selected classes through such schools as Thomas More University, Gateway Technical & Community College, and Northern Kentucky University.
NCC staff members oversee the application process with the respective college before the start of each semester.
In order to qualify for Dual Credit courses, students must meet the following criteria:
-Have completed the sophomore year of high school (online dual credit)
-Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale
-Must meet any prerequisites for the specific Dual Credit course as set by the institution, which may include a minimum ACT/SAT score
-Must have written permission from the high school and a parent
-Must maintain a grade of C or higher in each Dual Credit course in order to continue in the program
Upon Acceptance, the student will be responsible for the following:
-Pay the fee for the class to the institution, the 2022-23 tuition is seat at $216 for a 3 hour course. Students can apply for a Dual Credit scholarship through KHEAA for up to two courses.
-Purchase any required textbook for the class.
Dual Credit Grading at NCC
The grade is given by the college/university instructors and will appear on the NCC transcript. To reflect and award high school credit for the academic rigor of Dual Credit courses demand, NCC assigns the highest amount of quality points to Dual Credit courses.
Students will earn credit at NCC for Dual Credit courses as well as earning college credits. Since these colleges are all accredited institutions, the course credits are transferable to most other universities. There is, however, no guarantee that all universities will accept Dual Credit credits so students are advised to consult their intended college/universities to see how Dual Credit will transfer.

Honors Program
Some courses at NCC are designated as an “honors” section of a regular course. These courses cover all the same material as the regular course but move at an accelerated pace and have stronger course expectations.
Honors courses at NCC are weighted with a 0.5 addition, so a 91% course grade is worth 4.34 quality points (0.5 x 3.84).
