COACH JIM CONNOR AWARD
Coach Connor influenced most of the athletes and students who
matriculated through Newport Central Catholic High School during the 1950’s
and 1960’s. Everyone that talks about Newport Catholic from those days always
mentions Coach Conner. When we look to those whose life has affected the lives
of many others for generations to come, Coach Connor stands tall as a man who
dedicated his life to education and service of others.
The Boosters of Newport Central Catholic High School looking
to preserve tradition, honor excellence, and promote the ideals of Catholic
values while providing recognition to its student athletes who have excelled in
their High School Careers, have established the Coach Jim Connor Award. This
Award will be given at the Annual Hall of Fame Night to an outstanding
individual from the community at large who has demonstrated excellence in their
professional and personal lives and whose character represents the value of
family that we at Newport Central Catholic strive to teach and live.

FR. J0HN HEGENAUER COMMUNITY
SERVICE AWARD
This award is to be given to a person who has demonstrated
his commitment to his community and to the family values that Newport
Central Catholic High School strives to impart to its students.
This award honors the memory of Fr. Hegenauer who was a
dedicated priest of the Diocese of Covington from 1940 to his death in 1998.
He governed over NC as principal from 1947 to 1964; during which time he
accomplished so much a vicar of education. He was an innovator; he
instilled great wisdom and pride in the students of NC through scholastic
and athletic achievements. His commitment to Catholic Education was a
reflection of his life and dedication to his faith. His legacy to NCC
is reflective of his love of his people who returned their love and respect
for him as a priest and educator. |

BARKER, RICK ‘75 |
Rick Barker is a 1975 graduate of
Newport
Catholic
High School
. Rick was a four
time Regional Wrestling Champion and he was a State Wrestling Champion
three times. This is truly one of the most significant sport
accomplishments in the history of
Newport
Central
Catholic
High School because of the nature of
the sport.
Rick
is currently the assistant wrestling coach at
Ryle
High School
in
Union
,
Kentucky
.
He is in his third year with the Ryle Raiders who are the defending
Regional Champions. He is
looking forward to coaching a State Champion this year.
Rick
has graciously returned to Newport Central Catholic this evening for this
award, as his team is currently competing in the State Tournament.
Rick
has been employed by Cintas Corporation for the last 21 years as a
service/sales representative.
Rick
lives with his wife Julie and three daughters, Shannon, Atie and Anna in
Union
,
Kentucky
.

BATSCHE, RICK ‘71 |
Rick
began playing basketball in grade school for Mr. Jim Callahan.
He chose to go to NC in hopes of obtaining a college scholarship.
He still holds several records at NCC in basketball.
After
graduating Rick went on to play college basketball at
Thomas
More
College
, on a scholarship, and
averaged 14 points per game.
Rick
has continued his sports career playing and coaching several teams.
He has been coaching basketball at
St.
Anthony
School
in Taylor Mill for 13
seasons.
Rick
was inducted into the Northern Kentucky High School Athletic Directors
Hall of Fame in 1999. In
October of 2002, Rick was a guest on the ICN 6 Northern Kentucky Sports
Legends Program hosted by Charlie Coleman.
Rick
has been married to Carol Hoffman Batsche (1973 graduate of OLP) for 27
years. They have two
daughters, Christina and Amanda both graduated from
Holy
Cross
High School
and currently attend
Northern
Kentucky
University
.

CALDWELL, JIM '53 |
A talented player in three sports; quarterback in football, shortstop in
baseball, and a varsity letterman as a sophomore in basketball, all of
which demanded well-developed athletic skills and uncommon leadership
ability.
Jim was a member of NC’s regional baseball
championship teams all four years that he was a student – including the
1950 Kentucky State Championship team as a freshman. As a senior, he captained the 1952-53 Thoroughbred basketball team
to the Ninth Region championship, the first in school history and the
first parochial high school in Northern Kentucky to accomplish this feat.
After graduation from Newport Catholic, Jim played
professional baseball for several seasons in the Brooklyn Dodgers’
organization. He returned to
Northern Kentucky to marry Helen Valz in 1956. Helen and Jim, parents of four children, presently reside in good
health and happiness in Wilder, Kentucky.
Jim Caldwell embodies all the values inherent in
Newport Central Catholic’s educational goals and objectives. He is a true and loyal Thoroughbred.

CALLAHAN, JIM '57
FR. JOHN V. HEGENAUER
COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
|
This
year’s Fr. Hegenauer Award Recipient is the Honorable Jim Callahan, a
1957 graduate of Newport Catholic, a long-standing member of the Kentucky
House of Representatives. Rep. Callahan has served our community as
an active business leader, local government leader, elementary and high
school teacher, and as a high school basketball and baseball coach.
He is involved in numerous clubs and committees, is responsible for
securing millions of dollars for Northern Kentucky in state funding, and
the recipient of awards from all types of organizations too numerous to
list in our limited space. Most importantly, he is a proud husband,
father, and grandfather.
It
is the distinct honor and privilege for the Newport Central Catholic
Boosters to award to the Honorable Jim Callahan, one of our own, for all
of his contributions to our Northern Kentucky Community and for his
outstanding example of what commitment to community really means, the Fr.
Hegenauer Community Service Award for 2004.

CARLISLE, WAYNE
‘58 |
Mr.
Carlisle is an expert in heavy-lift and transportation services,
demolition and excavation, as well as, general development and
construction program management. He
is a member of the Board of Directors of Maxim Crane Works and is a member
of many corporate boards and involved in numerous business enterprises.
His contribution of time and effort to charities and involvement in
community projects is legendary.
There
is no one who represents the spirit of Fr. John Hegenauer and his
commitment to faith and community better than Wayne Carlisle.
It is a great honor for the Boosters of Newport Central Catholic to
present Wayne Carlisle with the Fr. John V. Hegenauer Community Service
Award.

Carper, Moe Grosser, Coach |
Moe was an outstanding Coach at Our Lady of Providence,
Newport, Kentucky (OLP) from 1976 until 1983. She coached Volleyball,
Basketball, Softball, Track and Field, Tennis, and Cross Country. There
were many District and Regional Championships during her years. Everyone
remembers Moe as an outstanding Coach. She is very sorry that she could
not attend this evening but expressed her deep gratitude and honor at
being selected as a Charter Member of the NCCH Hall of Fame. She commends
the Booster Organization for their commitment and dedication to ideals of
Catholic Education. Moe works for the U.S. Government in Florida and is
the mother of two young girls.

Connor, Coach Jim |
Coach Connor led Newport Catholic to three state
baseball championships and nine regional baseball championships. He also
let the basketball team to three regional championships. Coach Connor has
been previously inducted to the KHSAA Hall of Fame, the Kentucky High
School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Dawahares Hall of
Fame, Thomas More College Hall of Fame and numerous other Halls of Fame.
The Thomas More Convocation Center is also named in his honor. He is the
only Coach known to have coached a major league baseball rookie of the
year, David Justice and NBA rookie of the year, Newport Catholic’s own,
Dave Cowens.

COWENS, DAVE '66 |
(1962-1966) Dave played only his junior and senior
years at NCC. The talent and competitive spirit was there and he led the
team to the 1966 Regional Championship. His talent led him to a
scholarship at Florida State. His talent and hustle took him to the NBA
where he was Rookie of the year in 1970-71. He went on to be a NBA
All-Star seven times and was the All-Star MVP in 1972-73. He was league
MVP as well in 1972-73. He has coached the NBA Charlotte Hornets and is
currently the Head Coach of the NBA Golden State Warriors. Dave wrote to
us and told us that he would be unable to attend this "memorable
occasion" tonight because he has to coach a game in Charlotte, NC.
Dave stated, "I was taught a lot of skills to prepare for adult life
in a disciplined but fair environment at NCC. School spirit was a priority
so we had a competitive mind set in most activities, in and out of the
classroom. I am glad and proud that my parents sacrificed to provide me
with a NCC education and experience." Accepting the award on behalf
of Dave was his father, Jack Cowens.

FOSTER, CARL '64 |
1960-1964: A three year starter in Basketball and
leading scorer until John Brannen exceeded his 1676 points in a career.
Was a member of Regional Championship Team in 1963 and also played
baseball on the Regional Championship Teams of 1962 and 1964. Was Freshman
Boys Basketball coach at NCC from 1968 to 1973 and Girls Basketball coach
1988 to 1996. His 1995 Team won the region. Carl was Principal of Newport
Catholic High School from 1978 to 1983 and oversaw the merger with OLP. He
was Principal of NCCH from 1983 to 2000. Carl was honored and grateful to
be named to the NCCH Hall of Fame. Carl and wife of 33 years, Mary Jo,
live in Southgate, Kentucky and have two daughters who attended NCCH and
they have three grandchildren.

FREPPON, THOMAS E. '60 |
Tom is a 1960 graduate of
Newport
Catholic
High School
. Tom played basketball all four years at NC under Freshman Coach
George Schneider and Varsity Coach Jim Connor. In his senior year,
Tom was awarded the Walter J. McGaff Award as the top student athlete at
NC.
Tom played basketball for
Xavier
University
and in his senior year he was captain of the team. After college, he
played baseball for 10 years and softball for 35 years. He has
refereed high school basketball for 36 years. He has been involved
with youth sports for over 20 years as both a coach and as an
administrator. Tom was inducted into the Northern Kentucky Sports
Hall of Fame in 1991.
Tom worked for Western Southern Life
Insurance Company for 38 years before retiring in 2002. He has been
married to Carol Rechtin Freppon for 39 years, and they have four children
and 13 grandchildren. All of his children attended NCC and
participated in various sports at NCCHS. His daughter, Christie
McDonald, is the current Girls’ Basketball Coach at NCCHS and was
inducted into the NCC Hall of Fame in 2001.
Tom currently stays active by playing
golf, volunteering at church, tutoring grade school students, and scouting
for the NCC Girls’ Team.

Furman, Andrew
Coach Jim Connor Award Recipient |
The first Annual Coach Jim Connor Award
is presented to Andrew Furman. Mr. Furman is a newspaper columnist and
Radio Sports Talk host. He is well known in our Greater Cincinnati
Community and has shown excellence in his work and in his personal life.
We honor him as a family man who has the courage to state his opinions and
stand by his convictions. As such the committee is honored to bestow upon
him the Coach Jim Connor Award for his contributions to our community and
for his commitment to family values.
Columnist and Talk Show Host. Andy was born in
Brooklyn, NY, where his vast experience in the sporting world took root.
He was a sportswriter for both the Brooklyn Daily Bulletins and New York
Post. He was sports information director at St. Francis College, Hunter
College and Oral Roberts University. He was Publicity director for the
Fort Lauderdale, FL Strikers in the North American Soccer League. He was
Public Relations director for the following racetracks:
Monticello Raceway (NY); Buffalo Raceway (NY);
Centennial Park (Littleton, CO); Lakos Region Greyhound Park (Belmont,
NH); and Latonia Race Course (Florence, KY).
He is now one of the most respected Columnist for the
Cincinnati Post and sports talk show hosts in Cincinnati for WLW Radio.

GALLICHIO, STEVE ‘67
|
Stephen Gallichio graduated from Newport Central Catholic in
1967. He was a four year
letterman in track and still holds the school records in the 100 yard
dash; 9.7 seconds; 440 year dash: 48.7 seconds; and the 220 yard dash:
21.8 seconds. He was the GCL
Champion in the 100 and 400 yard dash, and holds the regional record in
the 440.
He was a member of the 1967 State Championship Track Team
which was referred to as the “Cinderella Team” because the team had no
track of their own.
Stephen distinguished himself as the State Champion in 1967
in the 100, 220 and 440 in which he set the State Record in a time of 49.6
seconds. He qualified for the
National Jaycee Track Meet in
Des Moines
,
Iowa
,
by winning the state championship in the 220 yard dash.
Stephen received a 4 Track Scholarship to Miami University in
Oxford, Ohio, where he set Freshman Records in the 100, 60, 50 yard
dashes, and was a member of the 440 relay team that set the school record.
In the 1971 Mid-American Conference Championships, Stephen
placed 2nd in the 100 yard dash, 2nd in the 440 yard
relay and 4th in the 220.
Stephen has one daughter, Jessica, a sister Marian and states
that his two brothers, Kenny and Tony, were also great athletes at
Newport
Catholic
High School
.
Stephen has worked for Ford Motor Company for over 29 years
and hopes to retire in a few years.

Groeschen, Leo '46 |
1942-1946: While at NCCH Leo participated in both
Basketball and Baseball. In 1945 and 1946 he led the Breds to the Northern
Kentucky Catholic League Championship. He led the school to its first
state Baseball Championship as a left-handed pitcher winning nine of the
teams 15 games. In the regional final in 1946 he threw a one hit game and
came back in the final and pitched a no hitter striking out 12. In the
State Championship, Leo pitched three games in two days allowing only nine
hits in the three games. KHSAA Commissioner, Ted Standford, was said,
"the finest hurling I have ever witnessed in a high school
tournament." After high school, Leo pitched for Xavier University for
two years and then was signed to a minor league contract in the Red Sox
Organization. His career was cut short due to a sore arm. Leo now resides
with his wife in Bellevue, KY. Leo is a member of the Northern Kentucky
High School Athletic Directors Hall of Fame.

HEGENAUER, FR. JOHN
COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD |
The
Newport Central Catholic Boosters have bestowed one community service
award prior to finalizing a true name for this award.
This Award is to be given annually at the Hall of Fame Night.
Tonight, at the Third Annual Hall of Fame Night, we are formally
dedicating this award in the name of Fr. John V. Hegenauer.
The Community Service Award will henceforth be known as the Fr.
John Hegenauer Community Service Award.
This
award is to be given to a person who has demonstrated his commitment to
his community and to the family values that Newport Central Catholic
strives to impart to its students.
This
award honors the memory of Fr. John Hegenauer who was first and foremost a
priest of the Diocese of Covington from 1940 until his death in 1998.
During that time he served many parishes throughout the Diocese, as
well as, being the Principal of Newport Catholic High School from 1947
until 1964. He also served the
Diocese as Superintendent of Catholic Education and Vicar of Education.
His commitment to catholic education is a reflection of his life
and dedication to his faith. His
legacy to Newport Central Catholic is reflective of his love of his people
who returned their love and respect for him as a priest and educator.
It
is with humble respect and an honor and privilege, plus a sense of pride,
that the Newport Central Catholic Boosters have chosen to honor this great
leader by naming their Community Service Award in honor of the Rev. John
V. Hegenauer.

HEIM, BOB ‘49 |
Bob
Heim has been considered by many to have been one of the premier
basketball players to have graduated from
Newport
Catholic
High School
.
He
played basketball and baseball for the “Thoroughbreds”.
He lettered three years in basketball and two years in baseball.
He
was coached by Jim Connor and Al Howe in basketball and Bud Connor in
baseball.
In
his senior year he helped lead NC to a 25-2 record.
Following graduation he accepted a basketball scholarship to
Xavier
University
and played under Coach
Ned Wulk. He was an
outstanding payer for Xavier having started every Varsity game in his
sophomore, junior and senior years. He
lettered all three years and was the team MVP in his junior and senior
year and captain of the team in his senior year.
Bob
Heim was inducted into the Northern Kentucky High School Athletic
Director’s Hall of Fame in 1986.
Bob
runs his own business, Double B Distributors in
Lexington
,
KY
and is now semi-retired.
Bob has been married to Ruth since 1954 and has four children and
eight grandchildren. He loves
to golf and go boating.

HEMMETER, MOLLY ALBRINCK |
Molly
played volleyball, basketball and softball while she attended OLP and NCC.
She served as varsity team captain for both the volleyball and basketball
teams and was awarded the Loyce Meadows Award her senior year,
an award presented to one senior in the region who exhibited the
highest in athletic and academic achievement.
After
graduating, Molly attended the
University
of
Louisville
where she received her
Masters in Engineering and then moved to
Indiana
to work for Eli Lilly
and Company. During college,
Molly was extremely active in intramural sports and became an avid runner
and biker.
Molly
then went on to
Harvard
Business
School
, during which time she
served as captain of the HBS volleyball team and ran the Boston
Marathon.
Molly
now lives in
San Francisco
with her four-year-old son, Ryan. She works as
an executive in the software industry and enjoys biking, hiking, and yoga.

HOWE, COACH AL |
Coached at Newport Catholic from 1946 to 1951. Was a
Football and Basketball standout at Newport High School from 1931 to 1935.
He is a member of the Northern Kentucky University, Xavier University and
La Rosa High School Hall of Fame. He was the first Northern Kentucky
athlete inducted into the La Rosa Hall of Fame. He coached at NCC without
compensation coaching both football and basketball and had the best record
in basketball for 25 Years. Al is a WW II Veteran, twice elected Sheriff
of Campbell County.
Al is now retired living with his wife in Fort Thomas,
Kentucky. Al is the father of three children. His son, Berry Howe,
accepted this Award on behalf of his Father. Al advised the Committee that
"My Years at NCC could not have been happier." He only regrets
that prior commitments kept him from attending this evening.

JACOBS, FRANK '86 |
1982-1986: Probably the most decorated football player
in NCC history. His accomplishments as a high school player are too long
to completely list all of them in this short space. He was Bally High
School All-American First Team. Parade Magazine All-American, Street &
Smith Top 50 All-American, Scholastic Coach/Gatorade "Kentucky Player
of the Year," Orlando Sentinel, "Dixie Dozen" and "All
South", Columbus Touchdown Club National Player of the Year Runner-Up
to Emmitt Smith, and the only high school athlete nominated for
"Kentucky Sportsman of the Year." During his three years as a
varsity player, his teams won three district championships, three
regional, and one state AA Championship, with two runner-up trophies.
Those are the highlights. Frank played college ball at Notre Dame, helping
the 1988-89 Irish to a National Title. His career at Notre Dame was cut
short by an ankle injury. He also played baseball at Notre Dame and set
the record for most home runs in a season. He was drafted by the New York
Mets in the 7th round of the 1991 draft. Frank was traded to
Montreal and while in AA at Harrisburg he was voted player of the year by
his teammates, and Player of the Year and Favorite Player by the fans. He
ended his career in 1996.

KEHOE, COACH BOB |
In the early 1940’s Bob started the athletic program at
Newport
Central
Catholic
High School
.
He coached and ran the Basketball program for years.
In 1943 Bob married Marie Clare Pape and moved to
Cincinnati
where he still resides today.
Bob has been involved in sports his entire life either as a player,
coach or working at various sporting goods stores.
He has his own Sporting Goods Company from 1962 to 1985 known as
Kehoe sporting Goods. He has
always worked with school sports programs.
Today Bob is still involved in sports working at
Turfway
Park,
Keenland and Church
Hill Downs. Bob has two
children, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Bob will celebrate his 86th birthday this spring.

KNOX, JAYNE BRUEGGEN ‘80 |
A
1980 Graduate of Our Lady of Providence Academy, Jayne played Basketball,
Volleyball and Softball all four of her years at
Providence
.
As a senior, Jayne was the Team Captain in basketball and
volleyball. In her senior year
in basketball she was a member of the 35th District All
Tournament Team, 9th Region team and All Tournament Team and a
Famous Recipe Star of the Week. In
Volleyball she was captain of the team that won the region and was State
Runner-up. She received
Honorable Mention in
Northern Kentucky
for her softball
prowess. Jayne was in the
National Honor Society in High School.
She attended
Eastern
Kentucky
University
graduating in 1984 with
a Degree in General Dietetics Magna Cum Laude.
She was also commissioned upon Graduation a 2nd
Lieutenant in the USAF. While
in the USAF Jayne was promoted to Captain and was Chief, Nutritional
Medicine Service, 56th Medical Group, MacDill AF Base in
Tampa
,
FL.
Jayne was honorably discharged in 1991 and married Captain David Y.
Knox, an F-16 pilot. Jayne now
lives in
Daytona Beach, FL., where she owns her
own plane, which she and her husband built.
She still is very active in sports and takes care of her three dogs
and husband. She wants to
thank everyone associated with this award, the school, her parents and
especially Coach Moe Grosser for her leadership and inspiration.
Accepting the award on Jayne’s behalf is her mother, Della
Brueggen.

LAROSA, DONALD ”BUDDY”
COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
|
The Newport Central
Catholic Boosters are proud to present the 2002 Community Service Award to
Donald “Buddy” LaRosa. Mr.
LaRosa has demonstrated his commitment to his community and to the family
values that Newport Central Catholic strives to impart to its students.
Buddy’s philosophy is “To live a full life,, be a credit to my
family and community, and touch young people so that one day they too may
experience the joys I have had.”
In
1954 Buddy began his first restaurant on
Boudinot Avenue
in Western Hills.
In April, 1973 a fire nearly destroyed the restaurant.
The youth of the community, through their high school coaches,
helped Buddy rebuild in 40 days what architects said would take six
months. This experience
strengthened Buddy’s commitment to the youth in
Cincinnati
.
In
1975 Buddy LaRosa’s High School Sports hall of Fame was founded.
The hall of Fame has five new inductees each year and honors 12 local high
school students for their academic and athletic achievements.
LaRosa’s also showcases two athletes weekly in our local newspapers.
Buddy supports the children’s Hospital heart fund, the Children’s
Home, WCET TV 48, and is a Board Member of the Greater Cincinnati and
Northern Kentucky Hemophilia Foundation. Buddy is involved with the
Cincinnati Golden Gloves for youth Program that provides young prospective
boxers with self-discipline and the opportunity to train with caring and
knowledgeable coaches. The organization has generated National and
World Olympic hopefuls.

McDONALD, CHRISTIE FREPPON '87 |
1983-1987: All time leading scorer and rebounder in
girls basketball, all-region three times. Received the Loyce Meadows Award
her senior year as the outstanding student-athlete in the 9th
region. Played on three regional volleyball champion teams, was all region
and all-state her senior year. Played on three state tournament teams in
softball, including the 1984 State Championship Team. She was selected
Northern Kentucky playr of the year three times and was named first team
all-state her senior year. In her senior year she received the Our Lady of
Providence (OLP) Award as the NCC outstanding female student-athlete and
was named by USA Today as the outstanding female student-athlete in the
State of Kentucky. Christie went on to a great career at NKU where she is
7th all time in scoring and 4th in rebounding. She
participated in three NCAA tournaments and was Great Lakes Valley
conference player of the year and Kodak All-American honorable mention her
senior year. She received the career achievement award at NKU her senior
year as outstanding student-athlete. Christie is a member of the Northern
Kentucky Athletic Directors Hall of Fame and is currently the girls head
basketball coach at NCC. She resides in Cold Spring, Kentucky with her
husband, Jeff, and their two children.

MASON, STEVE '70 |
Steve
Mason was a three-sport athlete: football, basketball, and baseball from
the 4th grade until he graduated from Newport Catholic in 1970.
Steve
earned nine letters, three in each sport while at Newport Catholic while
competing in the Greater Cincinnati League. Steve was one of the leading
hitters on the 1968 regional champion baseball team and was selected to
the 1968 KHSAA state tournament team. Steve was also selected to the
Greater Cincinnati League all-star football team in 1968.
Steve
played football at
Indiana
University
and earned a full scholarship as a quarterback and defensive back.
After
graduating from IU, Steve continued participating in athletics as a
tournament handball player and played on numerous softball teams.
Steve
is a self-employed real estate appraiser and has been married to Diane
Tedesco Mason for 27 years. They have three sons: Michael, Matthew, and
Jeffrey and reside in
Fort Thomas
.

MERTLE, COACH JENNY |
Coach Mertle is in her 24th year as a health/physical education
teacher, guidance counselor and coach.
Coach Mertle started her sporting career at
Holy
Cross
High School
where she played
volleyball, basketball and softball. She
was inducted into the Holy Cross Hall of Fame in 2000.
She attended NKU on a Presidential/Athletic Scholarship.
She obtained her M.Ed. from
Xavier
University
in 1989.
Coach
has been the OLP/NCC volleyball coach for the past 24 years amassing a
545-222 record which is one of the top in
Kentucky
for active coaches.
On
August 26, 2000
, she earned her 500th
victory as a volleyball coach in the Championship Match of the Parochial
School Tournament. Her teams
have made 15 trips to the
KHSAA
State
tournament during which
time she has 10 Regional Championships, 1 district runner-up and 4 KHSSA
State Runner-up trophies.
Coach
Mertle has coached NCCH slow-pitch softball for 15 years.
She has a record of 346-197 and STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS in 1997, 1999,
2000 and 2001.
Coach
Mertle started the girls track team at OLP in 1981, where she also coached
tennis.
Coach
Mertle’s awards for coaching are numerous.
She is a member of the Northern Kentucky Athletic Directors Hall of
Fame, Coach of the Year in Volleyball and Softball numerous times.
She is a Kentucky Colonel. She
is also a Sports Official in slow-pitch softball and Basketball
officiating in numerous State Tournaments and Championship matches.
She has been the Secretary at Arm for the 9th Region
Basketball Officials Association for 20 years.
In 2000 she was named Sports Official of the Year by the
Citizen’s for Sports Equity Association and was nominated to be KHSAA
Basketball Official of the Year in 2002.
Coach
Mertle has found the time to play on 4 National Championship softball
teams (3 Women’s and 1 co-ed). She
was the MVP in the National Co-ed Championship.
Coach
Mertle lives in Taylor Mill,
Kentucky
with her husband, Ray,
her 17 year old son, Michael, and Molly, their 6 ½ year old daughter.

NOLL, PATTY ‘79 |
Patti is a graduate of Our Lady of Providence Academy.
She was a four-year varsity starter in basketball, volleyball and
softball. In her senior year
she captained all three teams. In
her sophomore year the basketball and Softball teams finished second in
the Catholic League. In her
junior year the basketball team was 35th District Champions.
In
her senior year Patty was named to the All Northern Kentucky Team, 35th
District All Tournament Team and the 9th Region All Tournament
Team in basketball.
In
her four years in basketball she averaged 10 rebounds per game and scored
over 1100 points.
In
volleyball in her senior year the volleyball team finished 16-6 and came
in 1st in the Northern Kentucky Parochial Volleyball League and
2nd in the Parochial School tournament.
They were Regional and State runner-ups.
Patty
now enjoys coaching junior high basketball and playing volleyball.
She now lives in
Highland
Heights
.

PANGALLO, FRANK SR. '55 |
A 1955 graduate of Newport Catholic, Frank played three
years of Varsity Baseball and was the starting shortstop on the 1954 State
Championship Team. He was also in the Band, Schola and Secretary of his
class as a Junior. Frank traveled to Florida after graduation and tried
out for and was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Unfortunately, his
career was cut short when he broke his elbow turning a double play. He
then returned to Northern Kentucky and began working for General Electric
Company where he rose from the mailroom to a foreman as a mechanical
engineer. In 1983 he was asked to Coach the reserve baseball team, which
his tenure they won a regional title. He continued to serve the school as
coach at the reserve and varsity levels. There were many times when you
could observe Frank driving the tractor dragging the fields or working a
rake. He was a dedicated coach who knew the game inside and out. Frank and
his wife, Tina, sent all of their eight children to OLP or NCC. All of
their children participated in sports. Carmella and Angie played softball
for OLP and all six sons played baseball, basketball or football at NCC.
All six were all-region in their respective sport. Frank was a Kentucky
Colonel, a member of the Campbell County Knothole Hall of Fame and the
Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame. Frank passed away in 1997, survived
by his wife, Tina, his eight children and 15 grandchildren. Truly an NCC
Family Man. His wife Tina and son Rocky accepted this award on his behalf.

POTTER, TOM '67 |
Tom
graduated from Newport Catholic in 1967.
Several years later he and two others started their own sporting
goods store on
Monmouth Street
in
Newport
.
In
1972 he sold the store due to problems with his health.
He spent the next few years helping Jim Connor at
Thomas
More
College
with the basketball and
baseball programs.
In
1980 he came to Newport Catholic to help in the Athletic Department.
He became an invaluable asset to NCC.
Some of his contributions include the following:
- He
bid all of the athletic equipment to be purchased.
In the nineteen plus years he did this he saved NCC thousands
of dollars. It is
estimated $50,000 to $75,000 in athletic expenses have been saved by
his diligence.
He
worked with the football program book, netting more than $70,000 to
the school.
His
work with Northern Kentucky Sports Medicine and Nova Care provided
quality medical care and insurance service to our students.
These are a few of the highlights.
There are many other things that he did for NCC on an almost
totally volunteer basis.
It doesn’t end there. He
reached out to the community:
- He
produced the program book for the All A Classic Basketball Tournament.
He
was the director of the Northern Kentucky Football Coaches All Star
Game.
He
was director of the NKFBCA Top 24 Banquet each year.
Also,
having had physical problems all his life, he had a special feeling for
those less fortunate:
- The
NKFBCA All Star game has contributed over $8,000.00 to the Northern
Kentucky Association for the Retarded.
In
association with the Knights of Columbus, he organized a
Tootsie Roll Drive
at NCC for the
benefit of specially handicapped children.
This averaged $1,700 to $2,000 annually.
He
sent 100 – 150 NCC students annually to work the Northern Kentucky
Special Olympics.
He contributed greatly to student athletes of Newport Central Catholic,
Northern Kentucky
, and all of
Greater Cincinnati, as well as to young people who are less fortunate and
who have special needs.

RAPP, JOHN ’67 |
John
was at NC from 1963 to 1967. He
advanced from freshman team quarterback to varsity starting
OB
as
a sophomore where he earned a varsity letter for the next three years.
During his junior year he led the team to a #1 ranking in
Kentucky
a
first for NC. As Co-Captain
his senior year he led the team to the GCL runner-up position and was
named the Tri-State “Back of the Week” twice during the ten-week
season. He was also named to
the 1967 Kentucky All State Team and 1st All Star in the
Greater Cincinnati League. During
his four years on the basketball team John earned three varsity letters
and was a member of the 9th Region Championship team as a
junior and a member of the 9th Region runner-up as a senior.
In baseball, John played centerfield and was a member of the 1966
GCL Championship Team which was also the 9th Region Runner-up.
As a senior John also participate don the first NC track team to
win a State Championship. John
feels that the Leadership Award he received at graduation was due to his
athletic career at NC. He is
honored to be named to the Hall of Fame and is sincerely grateful to the
Boosters Organization for their support that made athletics possible at NC
for him during his four years. John
lives with his wife in
Ft.
Wright.
He has three children and three grandchildren.

RIEDINGER, JOHN A. ‘49 |
John
attended Newport Central from 1946 – 1949.
He lettered 11 times, 4 in baseball, 4 in basketball and 3 in
football. He played on the
first State Championship Baseball Team and was voted to the All State
Baseball Team two times. As a
senior he was awarded the Walter J. McGaff trophy as outstanding senior
athlete. He attended the
University
of
Dayton
on a partial scholarship
and was a first team player on the Varsity squad until the Korean War
ended his college and competitive sports.
He was commissioned, obtained his wings and became a jet instructor
in the United States Air Force. Upon
discharge from the Air Force he worked in the glass industry eventually
forming a company known as Full Line Glass Distributors Corporation which
now has operations in six states. John
still lives in
Texas
with his wife.
He has four daughters, six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
John states “My years at NC taught me to give it all your effort
no matter what the odds. Applying
this to my business life has made me quite successful.
At 71 I am still active in my business.” John was truly honored
to be chosen for the Hall of Fame and was disappointed that due to ill
health he and his wife were unable to attend this evening.

ROBINSON,
MICHAEL
K. '83 |
Mike
began his high school career at Newport Catholic in 1979. He started
as a three-sport athlete participating in football, basketball, and track.
The freshmen were 9th Region basketball champions in 1979-80. He was
a sprinter on the varsity track team as a freshman. As a sophomore,
Mike concentrated on football and track. As a sophomore, he started
the year at linebacker and became the starting tailback in the third game
of the season. NC participated in Class AAA at the time. Each
season that Mike participated in football, the team complied winning
records, and he was awarded many honors by the media, organizations,
coaches, and teammates. In 1982 he held the career rushing and
single game football rushing records. During his junior and senior
years, he was a sectional qualifier in the 100 and 200-meter dashes.
Mike
played football at the
University
of
Kentucky
and participated in the 1983 and 1984 Hall of Fame Bowls.
Kentucky
won the game in 1984 and was ranked 18th nationally. In 1987 he was
a member of the First Team All Southeastern Conference Academic Team and
graduated with a BA in Education.
Mike
is married to Jennifer and has three children. He resides in
Milford
,
Ohio
, and is employed by the Clermont County Sheriffs Office assigned to the
criminal investigation section.
Mike
stated, “I am so proud to have graduated from
Newport
Catholic
High School
and to have been a part of its many traditions. Without my
parents’ sacrifices, I would not have had this opportunity. For
all the teachers, coaches, and teammates that helped me and those that
continue to keep Newport Central Catholic rich in tradition and
excellence, I give my sincere thanks.”

SANDFOSS, JIM SR. '63 |
1959-1963: Participated in Basketball and Baseball at
NCCH. In Basketball, was all district, all region 1962 and 1963, as well
as all state in 1963. Was a member of the Christian Brothers New World
All-American Team in 1963. Was school MVP, team captain, runner-up player
of the year in the region and the first person to score 1000 points in NCC
history. Earned an athletic scholarship to Morehead State University. In
Baseball, he was a member of the 1962 Regional Champions and was team MVP,
captain, and led the 1963 9th region champions with a .400
batting average. At Morehead State he lettered three years, was all Ohio
Valley Conference, captain of team his junior and senior years, let the
team in scoring those years and second in the nation in free throw average
with a 90.1% average his senior year. He holds the O.V.C. three-year
record for free throws with an 87.5% average. He won the Len Miller award
for both academics and athletics. He was a Kentucky all-star participating
against both the Tennessee and Indiana all-stars. Jim and his wife, Sandy
(ANDP 1964), have been married 34 years and have had three children attend
NCC and have been blessed with four grandchildren.

A
1987 graduate of Newport Central Catholic, Terry was an outstanding
football and basketball player. He lettered four years in
basketball, two years in football, and one year in baseball.
In
basketball he was All District, All Region, All NKAC, Ninth Region
All-Star, and a member of the 1000-point club. He was Co-Most
Valuable Player of the Region, a Famous Recipe Player of the Week, and was
invited to tryouts for the Kentucky-Indiana All Star Team.
In
football, he was chosen by the Campbell County Recorder as the Northern
Kentucky Player of the Year. He was a First Team All State Player
and a Famous Recipe Player of the Week and runner up for Famous Recipe
Player of the Year.

lives in

with his wife Rhonda and daughter, Kaylee Jade.

A
1966 graduate of Newport Catholic, Terry was an outstanding basketball and
baseball player during his time at NC.
He was a starter in both baseball and basketball as a sophomore.
AS a junior he was All District, All Region and Most Valuable
player in basketball. AS a
senior he lettered in basketball and baseball.
In basketball he was All District, All Region,
All
State
and Most Valuable
Player, Ninth Region All Star Team. He
is a member of the 1000 point club and is in the WSAI Radio Hall of Fame.
He received a four-year scholarship to
Morehead
State
University
where he played four
years of basketball. In his
senior year he was the smallest player in the Ohio Valley Conference and
set the
Morehead
State
University
record for free throw
shooting average with an 89.5% mark. He
graduated in 1970 with a degree in business.
Terry lives in
Silver Grove

KY
with his wife of 33 years, Paula.
His children, Terry, Jr., Rob, Kimberly and Kristina all attended
NCC. He has three
grandchildren.

SCHNEIDER, COACH BOB ‘55
|
Coach Schneider, a member
of the Class of 1955, student, teacher, athletic director, assistant
principal, father, husband, grandfather and “THE COACH” of Football at
Newport Central Catholic for 35 years.
Of course he has coached other sports too.
The epitome of a Catholic Man and Teacher.
His accomplishments are many. As
a football coach he has a state championship, 4 runner-ups, and 5 regional
champions. In baseball two
regional championships and a state runner-up.
He has been President and Vice-President of the NKAC, President and
Treasurer of the Northern Kentucky Football Coaches, and a member of the
UPI Board of Coaches. He has
been recognized by the Kentucky House of Representatives upon obtaining
200 career wins, received the VFW Americanism Award in 1988 and is a
Kentucky Colonel. Coach
Schneider has been the GCL Coach of the Year, Northern Kentucky Coach of
the Year, in Football and Baseball, Enquirer Coach of the Year, Kentucky
Post Coach of the Year, NKAC Coach of the Year twice, NKFBCA Coach of the
Year twice, the NKAC Coach of the Year, is a member of the Northern
Kentucky Athletic Directors Hall of Fame and Northern Kentucky Sports Hall
of Fame. He was twice a State
Semi-Finalist for Athletic Director of the Year.
Coach Schneider and Nancy have been married 41 years and reside in
Woodlawn

SCHNEIDER, GEORGE N. ‘54
COACH JIM CONNOR AWARD |
A
1954 Graduate of Newport Catholic High School, Thomas More Graduate, Coach
at Newport Catholic, Holy Cross and Covington Catholic High Schools.
In nineteen years as a head basketball coach he had 365 wins and
173 losses. His 1965 Holy
Cross team was State Runner-Up and was the Coach of the Year in 1964 and
1965. Coach Schneider also
coached baseball and has a career won-loss record of 209 wins and 85
losses. Coach Schneider is one
of the all time winningest coaches in
Northern Kentucky
history.
Coach Schneider has been President of the Northern Kentucky Coaches
Association and as one commentator has stated he really has been a coach
for all
Northern Kentucky
. He has
been a coach and most importantly a teacher in the Catholic School System
since graduating from
Thomas
More
College. He has also served as
an Assistant Principal at Covington Catholic and worked with the Northern
Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and in Public Relations with Wiedeman Brewing
Company. His life has been one
of dedication to the concepts of Catholic Education and preserving the
ideals of tradition, honor and excellence that exemplify the ideals of
Coach Jim Connor. For these
reasons and because his actions speak louder than words, it is a distinct
honor for the Newport Central Catholic family to honor our graduate, coach
and friend with the Second Annual Coach Jim Connor Award.

SCHULTE, JENNY FLEISSNER '82 |
OLP 1978-1982: Volleyball, Basketball and Softball. Was
Famous Recipe Volleyball Star of the Week as a sophomore and senior. Was
all-state as sophomore, junior and senior, and member of state runner-up
team as a sophomore, junior and senior. Was all-region her senior year in
Basketball. Was a member of the 1980 regional championship softball team.
Se received a four-year volleyball scholarship to NKU and helped lead the
team to a conference championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in her
senior year. She was a member of the all tournament team. Jenny currently
lives in Taylor Mill, Kentucky, with her husband and children.

Coach
Connor influenced most of the athletes and students who matriculated
through
Newport
Central
Catholic
High School
during the 1950’s and
1960’s. Everyone that talks
about Newport Central Catholic from those days always mentions Coach
Connor. When we look to those
whose life has affected the lives of many others for generations to come,
Coach Connor stands tall as a man who dedicated his life to education and
the service of others.
The
Boosters of Newport Central Catholic High, in looking to preserve
tradition, honor excellence, and to promote the ideals of catholic values
while providing recognition to its student athletes, who have excelled in
their High School Careers, have established the Coach Jim Connor Award.
This award will be given at the Annual Hall of Fame Night to an
outstanding individual from the community at large who has demonstrated
excellence in their professional and personal lives and whose character
represents the values of family that we at Newport Central Catholic strive
to teach and live.
This
